Dramatic History (Singapore)

Objectives:

  • For the students to practice creative dialogue writing
  • For the students to learn basic drama and presentation skills
  • For the students to learn about Singapore's culture
  • and history outside of textbooks and classrooms

Overview and delivery:

The basic core of this programme is an effective introductory module to speech and drama. Reflecting MOE’s desire to make learning incidental and engaging while emphasizing National Education, EMC's programme team has woven Singapore’s historical and cultural heritage as a template for the children's creativity.

Instead of relying on textbooks and assigning rigid parameters for the project, the children are asked to choose a topic of their interest and develop the project from there. They will start their quest for ideas at Sentosa's Images of Singapore. Applying basic journaling through note taking and snapshots are all elements of process skill learning.

As part of the creative writing process, our trainer will help the children to work out a script which includes an introductory blurb, narratives, dialogues and settings based on the topic chosen by the children. Together with the journal, a portfolio of ideas, sketches will be kept by the children.

Thereafter, it is a bevy of drama exercises to get the children comfortable
with speaking out and loud in front of an audience. Special care will be taken
to help the children enjoy these sessions by having them in the form of games
and pitching the exercises at the correct ability levels to help bolster
confidence.

Finally, armed with script and skills, the children will now enact the plot
and characters they have created and rehearse for the final presentation. Our
trainer will also use this opportunity to tweak the more technical aspects of a
dramatic production.

This programme is recommended for students aged 10 and above with a good
grasp of the English Language. It may also be adapted for children who are
weaker in English, but we highly recommend a differentiated approach.

Module Description

Inspiring Images: Mining for Ideas

My Singapore Story
A creative writing lesson where students will work with our trainers to create a fun and simple script portraying Singapore's history, culture and society. Emphasis will be made to differentiate between everyday and dramatic language use.

Look at Me, Listen to Me
This module allows the children to experiment with simple role play, drama
games to enhance their speech and presentation skills. Emphasis will focus on
getting the children to speak confidently and be heard clearly EMC may use
video recording to assist the trainer with critique and analysis.

This module will combine the children's story and the skills learned in a
series of rehearsals for the actual presentation. Children will construct or
bring any costumes and props necessary.

Creativity and innovation will be emphasized as the children are asked to
come up with prop and placement ideas.
